Visiting Paris

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Owing to its location, Paris has a temperate, oceanic climate; ideally situated along the banks of the river Seine. Almost everyone taking a European vacation will decide on a short stay in Paris; most people quickly discover that a few days is not really enough.

A city famous for its fabulous architecture, good food, wine, street markets and galleries; these include the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, markets and a history only matched by a few other European cities. Traveling around Paris is relatively easy for visitors as well as locals; the underground train system or Metro can take you to anywhere within the city and is simple to use.

The Eiffel Tower at over 300 meters tall and is a magnificent steel structure; there are only a few places in the city where it isn’t visible. Illuminated at night it dominates the city’s skyline; if you are really enthusiastic you can take a tour where the guide will tell you how this beautiful tower was built.

A trip down the Champs Elysees is encouraged when you visit Paris as this is the city’s most famous street; it’s where you will find all the top class hotels, shops and restaurants. When you visit this region of the city you will see it is a much more select area; top class hotels are found here, although if you want to stay at a more reasonably priced hotel, they are available outside of the city center.

If you are an art lover you will enjoy the Louvre, a truly amazing museum; with over 300,000 wonderful artistic works, you simply cannot see all of it in one day. Even on a short stay in Paris, this is a an art lovers paradise; the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo statue just two of many appreciated works of art. Over the years, Paris has been home to many of the world’s famous artists; many of whom left large collections of their paintings here like Monet and Picasso.

The Arc de Triomphe another famous landmark was built by Napoleon in 1806; engraved with the names of generals that commanded his troops, it has become a popular photo spot for tourists visiting Paris. The Arc is the focal point of the city and contains an observatory to view the local area; including all the avenues of which it is a focal point.

You will not be at a loss for places to visit whilst in the city; although no trip would be complete without seeing these, they are probably best viewed as part of a guided tour, some of which are actually free. It’s an unfortunate fact that a Paris short stay vacation will only include some of the attractions; those attractions that cannot be seen will still be there the next time you visit.

Cheap Hire Cars

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

If you are someone who travels a great deal then perhaps it is time you considered budget car rental; taxis can be an expensive proposition when you are on vacation or business if you intend to use them every day. The one thing you don’t want though is to be lumbered with a car that sounds like your lawnmower. Perhaps a slight exaggeration on my part but when renting a car you do have to be careful. That said; here are a few ideas you can use when organizing your rental car.

One way that can help is to use a web site for budget car rental that allows you to set your own upper spending limit. These firms will try to get the best deal for your rental car and might just toss in unlimited mileage and upgrades, all of that without spending an extra dime. If you are lucky and decide to book a fly-drive deal for instance, then you may find the rental company has upgraded your vehicle but this is less likely if you book with the airline themselves. Of course the airlines realize they have a captive audience when people visit their site to book a flight and do not need to discount their car rental.

If you are not used to arranging budget car rental on the internet, do not let that put you off as you will be pleasantly surprised by the offers available. You will often find that there are discounts and extras available but only from the company’s web site. Shopping around on the internet can be fun and save you money as there is almost always a special offer available with one car Rental Company or another. Another thing to consider is the ease with which you can rent a car without leaving the comfort of your house.

Another thing to ask is whether your credit card company has negotiated special discounts with the budget car rental company you are going to use. Perhaps your frequent flyer program or military service can help reduce the cost of renting a car; it’s a long shot but it’s worth a try.

You would be wise to inspect your rental car before you drive off as you may find minor collision damage from previous renters which you do not want to pay for when you return. Not only the outside but also check the inside and make sure all the controls etc. work as the last thing you want is a hefty repair bill when you return the car.

More often than not your existing vehicle policy will cover the rental car insurance needed but it is always best to check first. Saving money is the game so why pay for rental car insurance you don’t need when renting your car; whatever the situation, insurance is always required when you rent a car.

Always make sure you have auto insurance as the penalties for driving without adequate cover are severe.

Caribbean Cruises

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

If you are looking for a vacation with a difference then you really need to book a Caribbean cruise; cruise vacations like these are also becoming more desirable with younger people. A cruise liner holiday is a combination of amazing entertainment, wonderful activities and an opportunity to visit the idyllic islands of the Caribbean. Some people only take a short break and visit perhaps only a couple of islands as part of a larger vacation but most people are doing a tour of as many islands as they can with some lasting over two weeks.

Whilst this type of vacation has become widespread each vacationer has diverse needs so there are many different packages available as it is a time for unwinding, enjoyment and revitalization. Never worry that there will not be enough to keep you occupied as cruise liners are past masters at ensuring their travelers have everything they need.

Research is the key here if you want something that matches your interests so pay a visit to your local tour agents and find out more about what’s available. Don’t forget that there are a large number of Caribbean islands so cruise liners have arranged packages which reflect certain island themes as they cannot visit every island in such a short space of time.

Some cruise vacations to the Caribbean are for people that like to party with plenty of discos and non-stop entertainment and may not be the ideal place for families. Some Caribbean cruise liner companies actually produce virtual tours and other information on DVD’s which can be collected from your travel agent or ordered online.

The main difference with this type of vacation is the number of changes of clothing you take with you as there is a greater opportunity to dress for evening functions. These are the sort of times when you will need to have a tuxedo for men and evening gown for women as part of your attire.

There are also plenty of activities if you take your children along on a cruise vacation and they will probably burn off all their energy by the time the evening has ended. There will be probably more for your children to do than at a standard resort, in fact you probably won’t see them much during the day.

But Caribbean cruises can be for adults to and there are those that do not have children on board. Special occasions can be made very special on board a cruise liner whether it is for an anniversary or a honeymoon, various packages and upgrades can be arranged.

Your Caribbean cruise will be a vacation of a lifetime as you don’t have to do anything but enjoy yourself as everything else is taken care of irrespective if you go on your own, a couple or part of a family group.

Visiting Paris

Monday, August 18th, 2008

As the capital of France, Paris is a large city; it’s location straddling the banks of the river Seine make it a beautiful city to visit. Almost everyone taking a European vacation will decide on a short stay in Paris; you can never become bored in this beautiful city.

This city is also equally well known for its gothic architecture and markets; including famous sights like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe to name just two internationally famous landmarks. Traveling around Paris is relatively easy for visitors as well as locals; there is an excellent underground system called the Metro which runs regular trains into the city center and is very easy to understand.

You can’t miss the Eiffel Tower, mainly because it’s over three hundred meters high; it’s visible throughout most of the city but the views from the top of this huge steel structure are even more impressive. In the evening the illumination means it can be seen for many miles; guided tours are available where the patriotic tour guides give you an in depth history and an insight to what it is to be French.

A trip down the Champs Elysees is encouraged when you visit Paris as this is the city’s most famous street; if you want to see famous, designer label shops and the restaurants, this is the place. This is an ‘up-market’ area that attracts thousands of tourists each day; the exclusive five star hotels situated in this more select part of the city might be out of most visitors’ price range.

The world famous Louvre museum is in this city; it contains almost a third of a million exhibits and is in fact one of the biggest art museums in the world. If you are an art lover then you could spend your whole short stay in Paris inside; the Venus de Milo is displayed here and of course the Mona Lisa. Paris has attracted world famous artists for hundreds of years; painters like Monet and Picasso spent many years here and a large number of their art works can be seen in Paris today.

The Arc de Triomphe another famous landmark was built by Napoleon in 1806; the names of his generals are engraved on its surface and another of those ‘must have’ photo land marks. Although not generally well known, the Arc had an observatory installed after it was constructed to provide views of neighboring areas; it stands in the place where the city’s main avenues begin including the Champs Elysees.

Certainly it is not fair to believe that these are the only places in the city worth visiting; and whilst there are many more worthy examples, those listed here should not be missed. On your short say in Paris you will only see a small sample of what is available for a visitor; that would require a longer visit as you probably won’t have time to visit the Gothic churches and castles in only a few days.

Visiting Paris

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Very few cities in Europe can compete with Paris as a romantic destination; it has the ability to please everyone and is often referred to as The City of Lights. Paris short stays are very popular and for good reason as it makes a superb location for a romantic weekend; there is so much to see and do that often only the main tourist attractions can be fitted in.

It is known for its wonderful buildings, style, excellent food and wine; it has much to offer visitors who adore culture, even if it is only for a long weekend. Traveling through the city of Paris can be very enjoyable; the underground train system or Metro can take you to anywhere within the city and is simple to use.

You can’t miss the Eiffel Tower, mainly because it’s over three hundred meters high; there are only a few places in the city where it isn’t visible. You can be assured of an even more beautiful sight if you visit in the evening when it is illuminated; if you are really enthusiastic you can take a tour where the guide will tell you how this beautiful tower was built.

On your Paris trip ensure you add the famous Champs Elysees to your list of places to visit; if you want to see famous, designer label shops and the restaurants, this is the place. This avenue may be select but it attracts large numbers of visitors daily; it is also where most of the five star hotels are situated but thankfully hotels tend to be cheaper once you move away from the city center.

The city’s famous museum, the Louvre is huge and worth a visit if you have the time; it houses over three hundred thousand exhibits but not all of them are ever on display at the same time. There are enough art exhibits to keep you occupied for more time than your short stay in Paris would allow; the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo statue just two of many appreciated works of art. What makes Paris special is the number of artists that have been attracted to this great capital; the likes of Monet, Picasso and many others lived in the city for years and some of their work can still be seen today.

The famous 19th century edifice built on Napoleons instructions, the Arc de Triomphe, is also in Paris; engraved with the names of generals that commanded his troops, it has become a popular photo spot for tourists visiting Paris. A little known fact is that there’s a viewing observatory built into the building allowing the whole area to be viewed; it is located in Place Charles de Gaulle where twelve of the city’s main avenues start, including Avenue de Champs Elysees.

Of course this article can only give a small sample places to visit; but these should certainly not to be missed because many offer regular guided tours, some at little or no charge at all. On your short say in Paris you will only see a small sample of what is available for a visitor; this article has not even discussed the topic of medieval castles and gothic churches which the city has in abundance.
