Santorini
Popular with wealthy Athenians, Santorini has a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere and is regarded as the most spectacular of the Greek islands. Dorians, Venetians and Turks have all occupied Santorini but its most influential early inhabitants were the Minoans.
The stunning scenery is a testament to the islands explosive past as in 1500bc a massive volcanic eruption blew away half the island and the resulting tidal waves destroyed the ancient Minoan civilisation, giving rise to the Greek legend of the lost world of Atlantis. The turbulent volcanic history is visible across the island. From the black sand beaches of the East coast, to the towering lava-layered cliffs, which plunge dramatically over a thousand feet into the sea.
The fertile soils supporAt lush vegetation, including crops of tomatoes, pistachio nuts and rambling vineyards. The wines are famous throughout Greece and at least five commercial wineries hold tastings in the summer. Santorini’s capital is the enchanting town of Thira, Nestling precariously on the crater rim overlooking the impossibly blue sea. Its sugar cube houses and picturesque churches are scenes from a million postcards, whilst excellent restaurants and exclusive shops are tucked amongst its winding, whitewashed streets.
The East coast of the island boasts the best beaches however. Here, you will find huge swathes of volcanic sand, crystal clear water for swimming and a fine selection of tavernas, restaurants and nightlife.
